Knowsley’s rich agricultural history is full of untold stories—help us uncover, preserve, and celebrate them! Thanks to a £237,522 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, environmental and social justice charity, Feedback Global, are bringing communities together to explore how food shaped Knowsley, ensuring that its traditions, skills, and knowledge aren’t lost to time.
From the archives to the fields
We’ll dig into Knowsley Archives, interview former agricultural workers, and track changes in land use, employment, and local food traditions. Our research will uncover 50+ years of how food shaped the community:
- Oral recordings of farming families sharing their experiences.
- Internment records of WWII prisoners of war who worked the land.
- The poetry of Annie Harrison, capturing life on Knowsley farms.
The records, memories, and findings will be safeguarded at Knowsley Archives in Kirkby for generations to come.
We can’t do it alone!
We’re looking for volunteers, students, and local groups to dig into history, get creative, and bring Knowsley’s food heritage to life. Whether you’re passionate about storytelling, history, or community projects, there’s a place for you. Join us to explore, create and celebrate with creative activities, hands-on research, and fun events as we piece together Knowsley’s food story.

Why bringing Knowsley’s heritage to life is so important
More people involved in heritage – With few heritage sites in the borough, and celebrating Knowsley’s 50th year, our project gives residents a chance to connect with their history. We’ll focus on those facing food insecurity and unemployment, making heritage accessible to all and how it can be harnessed to support the future.
Boosting wellbeing – By exploring Knowsley’s food history, we’ll promote healthier, more sustainable choices. Hands-on activities will build confidence, encourage social interaction, and create a sense of achievement.
Developing new skills – Those joining us will work with archivists, artists, and community leaders to research, interview, write, and design exhibition materials. Plus, we’ve created two job roles: early career archivist and community education officer.
Strengthening community connections – This project will enrich the lives and of residents and strengthening the community with education, engagement and celebrating local people, art and their heritage. It also deepens Feedback’s roots in the community, connects us with new groups, and reinforces our mission of activity, education, and advocacy.
Redefining heritage – Heritage isn’t just buildings; it’s stories, memories, and traditions. We’ll capture and preserve these narratives, ensuring they inspire future generations and aren’t limited to the past..
Join us in uncovering Knowsley’s past and shaping its future!
